Does Online Marriage Counseling Actually Work?

There’s not much you can’t do on the internet these days. You can order a pizza, buy a car, buy a house, or you can even book a vacation. Did you know that you can also do online marriage counseling? That’s right. If your marriage is falling apart and you’re determined to make it work, you can just get online and start talking about your feelings and your marriage problems. Does online marriage counseling work, however? While it’s true you can get a marriage license online and you can even get married online in some cases, marriage counseling is a little too delicate to work on through a computer screen and an internet connection; or is it? Let’s look at some examples and see if they can be worked out through online marriage counseling.

Example 1

Let’s say Angela and Mark are having huge marriage problems. Angela found a phone number in the pocket of Mark’s jeans that he claims is a business prospect. The problem is that Mark works for the local country club as a custodian. What kind of business prospect would he have and it’s funny that her name is Julie with a heart over the i. Angela is of course suspicious and she thinks Mark is cheating. She’s found lipstick on his clothes, his glove compartment once had a woman’s pair of underwear in it and he is always deleting the phone calls and messages from his phone. Would online marriage counseling help Angela and Mark? Probably not. An online marriage counseling session wouldn’t force Angela and Mark to remain calm during this very emotional ideal. Without a counselor in the same room, their emotions would likely run rampant and they wouldn’t get anything accomplished.

Example 2

James and Janet are fighting over money. They want to buy an HD Plasma TV but James keeps going out with his buddies on Friday night to the strip club. Janet is already mad about him going to a strip club, even though he says he’s just there for support for his single friend and that it’s completely innocent, but he’s also draining their bank account. Would online marriage counseling help James and Janet? Possibly because this situation only requires a logical commitment and compromise between the two so that they can save adequately for the things they want.

So it seems that online marriage counseling can help some couples, but for those couples with larger problems, who can’t seem to work anything out without an emotional outburst, those couples would probably be better off with a real world counseling session. Online marriage counseling just can’t give those couples the personal time they need and it won’t provide the type of environment that’s so important for working out those serious marriage problems.
