This piece of identification allows you and only someone who has an interest in your marriage license records to obtain them. This can be you, your spouse, or even a government agent. Other states might have an office such as a city clerk’s office where you can go and obtain your marriage license records. It would be a good idea to research your state or the state in which you originally obtained the marriage license on the internet. Once you search for the state on the internet you can easily find the right department you need to contact for your marriage license records. A lot of states allow you to obtain the information by mail but they include extra fees for credit card processing and shipping. Illinois, for example adds in an additional $8.50 credit card fee and a $19.50 fee for shipping your marriage license records to you. This is convenient but can be costly so please keep that in mind as you conduct your research. Illinois also requires two forms of identification as opposed to one in some states. The identification can be a state driver’s license or identification card. If you don’t have an identification card you would need to bring in two forms of alternative identification such as a voter’s registration or a medical identification card. Marriage license records are held indefinitely by the state and can be obtained at anytime now or even in 20 or more years from now. If in time there is a storage issue the records will just be moved elsewhere or turned into electronic documents but not destroyed.
